Chris Ward-Guthrie, GIT - Project Geologist
In nearly three years at NGA, I’ve travelled all over Central Washington and have been a part of many different projects: logging drill core samples in isolated places, driving up dusty forest roads, spending long hours on hot construction sites, and bushwhacking along riverbanks. As a Project Geologist, the variety of projects and the challenges of project planning keeps things fresh and exciting every day.
I graduated from the University of Washington in 2004 with my B.S. in Geological Sciences, then completed my M.S. at Western Washington University in 2008. My thesis (Paleomagnetism and Detrital Zircon Geochronology of the Skeena Group, British Columbia) involved helicopter trips to isolated subalpine ridge lines, hours in a hot lab, and zapping zircons with a laser.
In between my degrees, I worked a year for PacRim Geotechnical in Seattle, WA as a lab technician, performing the standard assortment of proctors and sieves. I also spent time in the field, helping install and initialize tiltmeters and inclinometers at the Beacon Hill Tunnel for Sound Transit light rail.
My free time generally revolves around my three boys with travelling team soccer games, Science Olympiad competitions, and camping in our VW van. My wife and I enjoy walks to the park or coffee, hitting up yard sales and cooking up crazy adventures for our family. When I truly have free time, I like to build and paint models, collect fossils and rocks, and listen to my record collection.
